AI AND SOFTWARE INNOVATIONS: CORE CONNECTIVITY
Yesterday’s Downtown Business Forum felt like a midnight gathering of AI power players. Innovate Orlando and the Downtown Orlando Partnership hosted experts from UCF’s AI Institute, legal experts, and emerging tech leaders, focusing on how AI is genuinely transforming business operations.
Key takeaways include:
- Tackle clear business challenges first before adopting new AI tools.
- Ninety-five percent of generative AI pilots fail due to lack of leadership readiness, not tech limitations.
- UCF’s AI Institute supports growth with 90 Ph.D. students specializing in Computer Vision and Robotics.
- By 2030, nearly 60% of workers will need to reskill to collaborate effectively with AI.
- Human oversight is essential to manage legal risks from AI outputs in critical scenarios.
- Collaboration across industries in Orlando is vital to accelerate AI innovation and close funding gaps.
AI is already responsible for 51% of nearly 78,000 software jobs and brings in $472 million of startup funding. Kore.ai leads industry reports with 40% improvements in workflow efficiency. UCF’s patented text-to-video AI empowers creatives, while AMD’s partnership supports chip innovation backed by $830 million in regional AI investments. Startups like TENEX.AI show the state’s vibrancy, with over 40 Florida AI firms backed in the first half of 2025.

FOUNDERS AND SCALE-UP SPOTLIGHT: CATALYSTS FOR GROWTH
Orlando’s founders are turning ideas into impact. ProMedia expanded media tech statewide, and DeepWork Capital invests heavily in AI deals. AssistRx exemplifies success with 27% workforce diversity.
Supported by UCF mentorship and state initiatives including the $50 million Health Care Innovation Revolving Loan Program, nearly 400 Florida startups raised $472 million in early 2025, not enough were in Central Florida. The city stands #94 globally with only 8.5% growth. There’s room for improvement here. Resources like Starter Studio, Cenfluence, BOT, UCF Business Incubator and Rally are doing their part to empower these companies but as discussed in this week’s Innovate Orlando Collective Impact Leadership Council meeting, all these efforts are currently working independently of each other. Aligned support from the region’s enterprise companies, foundations, economic development organizations and government around a common strategy to scale our innovation economy is necessary if we want to see our economy evolve.

SIMULATION, GAMING, AND IMMERSIVE TECH: CREATIVE-ENTERPRISE LINKS
This week, the National Center for Simulation celebrated its Hall of Fame induction of Elizabeth Baron and Walter Chambers, honoring decades of leadership in modeling, simulation, and training. Elizabeth summed it up by saying, “Simulations let us understand complex ideas, often beyond our usual thinking, that’s where the magic happens.” Carolina Cruz-Neira highlighted Elizabeth’s revolutionary work in immersive simulation within the automotive industry, laying the groundwork for today’s digital twin technology.
Orlando dominates with a $7 billion simulation sector supporting 60,000 jobs, and that number is growing faster than the national average since 2018. Talent from Full Sail University and UCF fuels innovation across defense and entertainment, with Orlando-based DiSTI cutting industrial risks by 30% using mixed-reality trainers. Gaming giant EA credits more than 85 graduates from Full Sail on its NFL titles, while UCF prepares students for careers in theme park innovation. The Kia Center recently upgraded its fan experience with AR tech that boosts engagement by 25%, and Universal’s MDSX is designing immersive experiences that push the boundaries of entertainment.
Orlando’s reputation as a simulation hub continues to grow, blending creativity with enterprise in ways that keep the industry pushing ahead.

AEROSPACE, SPACE, AND DEFENSE TECH: REGIONAL TO NATIONAL SCALE
Blast off with UCF’s R1 rocket research and regional aerospace cluster generating approximately $29.5 billion in economic impact and supporting about 136,000 workers in Central Florida. The Space Coast has seen around 89 launches so far in 2025, marking one of the busiest spaceport regions nationally. The U.S. Space Force is leveraging gaming and simulation technology with military and regional partners to improve training efficiency by approximately 40%.
Kratos Defense has secured over $68 million in SBIR contracts for hypersonic systems development but that will be in Indiana not Orlando. SpaceX continues frequent missions from the Space Coast, contributing significantly to the region’s aerospace economy. UCF’s active research in aerospace medicine, including NASA collaborations, is advancing space health technologies. Aura Aero has established its U.S. headquarters in Daytona Beach, supported by the local aerospace research ecosystem. Collectively, these efforts contribute substantially to national aerospace exports and job creation linked to UCF-led partnerships.

HEALTH TECH AND DETECTION INNOVATIONS: PRECISION IMPACT
The University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine is leading advances in aerospace medicine to support long-duration human space missions. With funding exceeding $67 million from NASA and other foundations, UCF researches how microgravity, radiation, and isolation affect astronaut health. These studies also inform improvements in diagnostics and treatments for conditions on Earth.
Recent appointments of experts with NASA and Axiom Space experience reinforce UCF’s leadership in this field. The new Center for Aerospace and Extreme Environments Medicine integrates medicine, engineering, computer science, and psychology to develop technologies benefiting astronauts, military personnel, and others exposed to extreme environments.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND EDUCATION ENABLERS
Rollins College is transforming downtown Winter Park with its $50 million Innovation Triangle project. This ambitious development brings together a brand-new Rollins Museum of Art, a state-of-the-art Institute for Management and Executive Leadership, and the recently expanded Alfond Inn. Together, these facilities will create a vibrant hub for creativity, leadership education, and community engagement. The new museum alone will offer about 31,000 square feet of gallery and educational space, more than doubling its current footprint and providing room for major exhibitions and innovative programs. This intersection of arts and business education aims to inspire future leaders while strengthening the cultural fabric of Central Florida.
In healthcare, Orlando Health continues to innovate by deploying AI-powered wearable technologies that monitor patient health in real time. These cutting-edge tools support chronic condition management and enhance clinical decision-making, improving outcomes across area hospitals and clinics.
UCF, partnering with BNY Mellon, mentors a growing cadre of fintech professionals, graduating thousands each year who contribute to Orlando’s dynamic financial technology sector. Millennials and Gen Z now make up 58% of Orlando’s tech workforce, supporting a regional economic impact valued at approximately $29.5 billion. These public-private collaborations weave a strong talent pipeline, critical to sustaining the region’s 80,000 tech jobs and overall prosperity.
